An unfilled impression is an ad request that went out and came back empty — no ad, no revenue, just a wasted opportunity. A small amount of this is normal. A large or growing amount is a leak worth tracking down.

Where the leaks usually start

  • Price floors set too high for the actual demand available on certain ad units.
  • Line item priorities that starve remnant and Ad Exchange demand of a fair shot.
  • Waterfall setups with too many sequential steps, timing out before backup demand can respond.
  • Geo or device targeting gaps — traffic segments with no line item covering them at all.

How to diagnose it

Pull an Ad Manager delivery report broken down by ad unit, device, and country, filtered to unfilled impressions. Patterns usually jump out fast — a specific country with no coverage, a mobile ad unit with a floor price no one's meeting, or a line item hierarchy quietly blocking Ad Exchange from competing.

Fixing the drain

Lower floors on segments with clear unfilled patterns and test the impact on realized revenue, not just fill rate alone. Simplify unnecessarily long waterfalls in favor of unified first-price auctions where possible. And make sure every meaningful traffic segment — by geo, device, and content type — has at least baseline demand able to compete.

Where AdPulse fits in

Stopping this kind of leak is exactly what ongoing ad ops support is for. We monitor fill rate trends, isolate the segments losing revenue, and adjust pricing and waterfall structure before it compounds.
