Limited inventory is one of the most common ceilings publishers hit inside Google Ad Manager. Traffic keeps growing, but revenue flattens because there simply aren't enough ad units, or enough eligible impressions, for demand to compete over.
Start by auditing what you actually have
Before adding anything, pull an inventory report by ad unit and format. Look for pages with zero or one ad slot, templates that never got updated with new placements, and device types (especially mobile) that are under-monetized relative to their traffic share.
Practical ways to expand inventory
- Add a second, clearly separated display unit below the fold on long-form content pages.
- Introduce native or in-content video units on pages with strong dwell time.
- Enable anchor or interstitial formats for mobile, where screen space is the real constraint.
- Refresh inventory responsibly — timed or scroll-based refresh on eligible units, within Google's policy limits.
Don't just add slots — make them competable
New ad units only help if demand can actually see and bid on them. That means mapping new placements into your existing line items and private marketplace deals, not just leaving them on remnant Ad Exchange pricing. This is where a lot of publishers leave revenue on the table — the inventory exists, but the deals that would pay well for it were never extended to cover it.
